A few weeks back, Korean artist Kim Jung Gi visited San Francisco for a live draw and book signing at the SOMARTS on Brannan street. Dubbed as a Pop Up Art Show, fans could come see many of his works on display, meet the artist, and purchase any of his three MASSIVE sketchbooks (well worth the money) and his new graphic novel SPY GAMES.
And while the artist did indeed sign any books purchased, he also did a 2-3 minute ink sketch in each book. I was amazed how he didn't need to pencil out the drawing and just went straight to a marker or ink brush pen for the drawing.
And while that was amazing, what was even more incredible was to create a 3 hour ink drawing mural without penciling it out first. This first part of several posts on Kim Jung Gi covers that live mural done in front of a crowded room of fans. And, I took photos of the progress.....
Above: At about almost 30 minutes in. Kim Jung Gi took a break about every 45 minutes for the 3 hour demostration. I don't think I could stand and draw like that for 5 minutes.
I wonder if the artist plans out the mural beforehand with a sketch and to work out the 3-point perspective. Either way, it is impressive.
