Lil Devil in Color

Lil Devil drawing inked and colored. Most of these monster drawings will be non-color but I felt like adding some color to this one and then maybe I'll use it on the back cover of my Monster Sketchbook, which will be in color.

Summer Reruns: Figure Drawing

Hhhm. A little long on the forward ankle and that back leg's lower half needs to be pushed to the left. Other than that, I like the curves.

Summer Reruns: Figure Drawing

This was an interesting model. Her name was Moonbeam or something very hippy-ish. She had whiskers coming out of her chin. And she was very overweight. But every student had a drawing of her in their final portfolio at the end of the semester. It is that volume and curves that made her fun to draw.

Summer Reruns: Figure Drawing

Another old figure drawing found while cleaning. Wow! Look at that hair! If that doesn't date this drawing, nothing will. But another breakthrough as the drawing is halfway decent coupled with the shadow and highlights that really make this portrait shine. Probably done with conté or charcoal and several generations old (I'll have to find the original and scan it when the large format scanner is up and running).

Summer Reruns: Figure Drawing

Summer time is nearly here! Which means Summer Reruns! So, between all the new art, I'll slip in some oldies but goodies with the art. While cleaning, I found this old figure drawing portrait. Probably almost 20 years old at this point. Much moodier than my usual stuff but you can get those effects with charcoal. And then, since it was done larger, I probably xeroxed it down in size and then scanned this. So this is a few generations from the original. But it was a bit of a breakthrough at the time with my art since I wasn't consistently getting anything this good with each drawing.

Pencil Clean Up on The Zombie

It's Zombie Saturdays! Yeah, I just made that up. More clean ups with a touch of inking already started.

Pencil Clean Up on The Bride

It's Friday...Friday...Gotta Get Down on Friday!! Sorry, channeling a little Rebecca Black there. Yeah, I know. That joke was relevant two years ago. Anyway, here is The Bride of Frankenstein getting risque on her wedding night. Still some wonky anatomy with this one but you can compare the rough and clean up below.

Pencil Clean Up for The Evil Genius

The pencil clean ups continue. Here is an Evil Genius (looking somewhat Steve Carell-ish). You can compare the rough and the clean up below.

Pencil Clean Up for Drac

More pencil clean ups from the last meet up. This one for a cartoonish Dracula. I still need to work out some parts but I was tightening things up and doing some rendering. I'm liking the rendering so I my skip the inking and just work it all up in pencil.

Here is a comparison between the roughs which I posted months ago and the clean up.

Pencil Clean Up for The Hunchback

We have fun at our BAD TSA meet ups but it is important for me to be productive as well. So I have a goal of what I want to work on at each meeting. This time, it was to clean up the pencils on several of my monster drawings that I wanted to prep for inking to use for a sketchbook.

It is subtle but you can compare the two versions above. The left are loose pencils while the right tightens things up and makes things clear for inking. Although I still have a little perspective to work out.

BAD TSA Meet Up for June

On Saturday, we had our main monthly meeting of BAD TSA (Bay Area Digital & Traditional Sequential Artists). Yeah, we know that name is a mouthful. BAD TSA is a funny abbreviation but we'll probably go by Bay Area Sequential Artists by A.P.E.

We do have smaller meet ups at a cafe in Walnut Creek but the main one seems to be the one every month at a cafe just off of UC Berkeley. There is more space to work.

The idea is to have a gathering of like-minded artists interested in comic book work. Most artists work alone at home so getting together to socialize, draw, talk art, and eat really energizes us.

This was our third meet up at the Berkeley location. In the past, we would just talk, sketch, and eat and leave it at that but this time we wanted to try to add some things to the meet up.

One of the things covered was an update on our anthology comic that we want to sell at the Alternative Press Expo in October. At this meeting, we started to move things forward with a head count of who was interested and what kind of story they are working on. Currently, we have about 15-20 people interested.

We also did some introductions for any new people. It was a great turn out with twenty people and up to twenty-five with some later-comers.

Another thing we tried was a group draw. Other meet ups like Sketch Bomb do this so this time we tried an artist trading card sketch. Everyone got a sketch card and twenty minutes to draw. The theme was "Monster Girls" and, after showing off the cards, we did a blind pick so everyone got some art from another artist.

Mostly, the artist card thing was a group project to get everyone working together but it was also a good lesson in deadlines, working quick, and learning to give up our art at the end.

It was great to see everyone's interpretation of the theme.

Team Spunky...YAY!!

Another piece with lots of micro Kirby Krackle. No real rhyme or reason to the characters or words, just me having fun and practicing.

Space....the Final Frontier....

I've been lagging on the art lately. Being sick will do that to you. And maybe the post-semester drop off. But I am in a comic book art kind of mood. And I want to ink stuff. Not just figures but rocks, rubble, texture, armor, the works!! So this page from the sketchbook fit what I was looking for. In retrospect, it isn't that well thought out with the pose, dopey look on his face, and the space rubble. Did he shoot an asteroid? Regardless, I did rework it from the original pencils that I posted months ago (posted again below).

BTW, I redid the blog look. I'm not sure if I like it and might change it back if I can.
