In Two Weeks.....

BASA at APE

It was a fun weekend as my friends and I exhibited our artwork for the first time. A good starter convention for us was the Alternative Press Expo (A.P.E.) in San Francisco. While it was really six individuals getting two tables, we did exhibit under the Bay Area Sequential Artists (B.A.S.A.) name and sold the BASA anthology.

Tim Tam was picking my brain for artists I liked and, based on my raving about Mark Schultz's work, went down to his booth, bought his book, and had him sign it.

We also had another gathering of artists last night to do a mock table set up. Really, we didn't get a chance to set too much up but it was enough to know that space will be tight with just the 6 of us exhibitors. But we will make things work.

The Convention Push

Did I mention that I'll be exhibiting at my first comic show in a week and a half? Myself and 5 others will be exhibiting under the BASA name and selling our wares. We've been working, planning, and building toward this for the past six months and are now starting the big media push, which will be challenging since we are all basically unknowns and this indy comic convention is up against the New York Comic Con. Fortunately, they are on another coast. lol

The graphic above, one in a series, I designed so we can share it all over the interwebs. The APE logo is by the Comic-Con people, the cover of the anthology was painted by the talented Kinman Chan, and the cover of the anthology along, with our new BASA logo, was designed by BASA member Alice Lewis.

These arrive the other week. Business cards!! I'm hearing that next month's APE convention isn't the best for selling but is a good networking con. So I should be getting some good mileage out of these.

Artist's Cards

Saturday night was my "Stay at Home/Chill Out" night. I think I needed a breather after staying out late after class on Wednesday talking to almost 1am, Panera meet ups Thursday and Friday evening, and then my BASA Art Field trip to the Crocker Art Museum and Evangeline's in Old Town Sac on Friday. Lots of Arting it Up and having fun with friends but I do need those recharge days to catch up on sleep and work on some artist's cards for APE. The convention is one month away and there are still things that need to be done but, for the most part, all my irons are already in the fire and I'm just waiting on the printer. So this next month is just filing papers and working on art to sell.

The Invasioneers

Finally! Done! Unless I have any corrections! Looks good though and I'll have to add some of these to my portfolio since the Comic Art section of it is painfully lacking in anything sequential.

So next I put on my Editor and Pre-Press hat as I prep and paginate everyone else's files for the printer as they role in.

One and a half more pages down. One more for gray tones before I switch to being a word balloon monkey. Deadline looming. I can do it!!

BTW, high energy dance music makes for great work music but now I have to go to sleep. Ugh!

Late Night Working

I'm a night owl by nature, as my brother reminded me today. I've been that way since high school, which was always hell trying to adjust to 8am classes. But one of the things I like about the night, when the rest of the world sleeps, I have my ME time to work on art without any distractions. And, better yet, when I get into a work groove, I can put on my headphones and run iTunes in the background while I work on the computer.

Tonight's work was to continue putting some gray tones on my six-paged anthology story. Two more pages gray-toned tonight. Three more to go before I have to switch over to word balloons and wrap it all up by Friday. Deadlines! Deadlines! But without them, artists would never finish anything.

Time to call it a night and get some sleep but here is a panel from one of tonight's pages.

Going A.P.E.!

Good news! Some friends and I have been accepted to exhibit at San Francisco's Alternative Press Expo in October. We've been planning this for 6 months and working each week on our art. Our next goal is to wrap up our anthology project in the next two weeks to sell at the expo. If all goes well, it should be an 80-page trade paperback including my 6-page parody. Here is a sample.....

Planet of the A.P.E.

Crap! I totally forgot I had these photos on my camera of the Alternative Press Expo (A.P.E.) in San Francisco for October 1st. I'm usually good for every 3 or 4 years with this con since I'm not heavily into the Indie scene. I did spend more than I thought I would thanks to Stuart Ng's booth. I picked up some good stuff too from a Dutch artist I had been looking for to the last couple volumes of LOVE & ROCKETS to a basic book on storyboarding to a DVD of the old classic CASPER cartoons.

Hey! I see Animation 166's SEAN MURPHY networking in the back of this "speed dating" affair for artists and writers.
