Bar Con Drawings
Bar Con is the gathering of people after a comic convention has shut its doors for the day. At the San Diego Comic-Con, the Hyatt bar is a notorious watering hole for after hours gathering of pros and fans. Asking the pros for sketching in this situation, essentially their off duty time, is probably a major faux pas however.
For San Diego, myself and friends like to frequent a place called The Tilted Kilt over near Petco Park. At WonderCon, it is The Canton and Kate O'Briens Pub. Where we differ from say the Hyatt situation is that we are all among friends, a collection of amateur, fan, pro, and semi-pro, and have no qualms about passing around a sketchbook for everyone to draw in.
The drawings themselves run the gamut between amateur and semi-pro but drawing ability isn't what is important. The sketchbook ends up serving more as a yearbook for that time as people can flip back and check out other friend's drawings from previous years.
My friend Ray is usually the guy that busts out the sketchbook for some drawings under the dim bar lights as we have a marker in one hand and a pint in the other. For the last few years, I've been bringing a sketchbook of my own and collecting other friend's drawings.
It also gives me the opportunity to sketch in a social scene so half the drawings are my own (and all are mine in this post). It is a good way to warm up and do some drawings every day (NOT that I'm advocating going to the bar and drinking every day!!)
I like the looser quality of many of these drawings. Some might be worth going back to and developing into a more finished drawing.
