On Saturday, we had our main monthly meeting of BAD TSA (Bay Area Digital & Traditional Sequential Artists). Yeah, we know that name is a mouthful. BAD TSA is a funny abbreviation but we'll probably go by Bay Area Sequential Artists by A.P.E.
We do have smaller meet ups at a cafe in Walnut Creek but the main one seems to be the one every month at a cafe just off of UC Berkeley. There is more space to work.
The idea is to have a gathering of like-minded artists interested in comic book work. Most artists work alone at home so getting together to socialize, draw, talk art, and eat really energizes us.
This was our third meet up at the Berkeley location. In the past, we would just talk, sketch, and eat and leave it at that but this time we wanted to try to add some things to the meet up.
One of the things covered was an update on our anthology comic that we want to sell at the Alternative Press Expo in October. At this meeting, we started to move things forward with a head count of who was interested and what kind of story they are working on. Currently, we have about 15-20 people interested.
We also did some introductions for any new people. It was a great turn out with twenty people and up to twenty-five with some later-comers.
Another thing we tried was a group draw. Other meet ups like Sketch Bomb do this so this time we tried an artist trading card sketch. Everyone got a sketch card and twenty minutes to draw. The theme was "Monster Girls" and, after showing off the cards, we did a blind pick so everyone got some art from another artist.
Mostly, the artist card thing was a group project to get everyone working together but it was also a good lesson in deadlines, working quick, and learning to give up our art at the end.
It was great to see everyone's interpretation of the theme.
