I posted pencil roughs of these drawings months ago but I went back with the new mechanical pencil and cleaned things up. They all need more work and I'm debating on some whether to ink them or just work them up to final pencils.
I do like this mechanical pencil though. I always avoided them as the unsaid rule in my old art school days was that it was frowned down on. But I was able to try one out in December and then purchased one last month. Sure, if I busted out the HBs and 6B and 8Bs, I could get a variety of tones but I think I tend to over render (see some of the previous pencil drawings). I can get a little variety with this mechanical pencil but if I'm prepping these to be inked, they seem to work just fine for my needs.
I also have an unusual habit of smearing my hand over my drawings while I draw. It comes from the unusual way I hold a pencil, something I started as a young child and was never taught differently, but I also curl my hand over the top. People frequently think I'm left handed because of this when I'm right handed. In the past, I did put a separate sheet of paper over the drawing to rest my hand on but I gave up on that years ago. But because of the smearing and rendering, I frequently would lose the line qualities of my drawing in the rendering. Frank Cho noticed this on my cosplay life drawing way back in May at the Big Wow! Con when he critiqued my work. He himself uses a mechanical pencil as well so this solution seems to be working for me.
And one final reason for the switch is because I was getting very tired of re-sharpening my pencils while in class. But I am still using the blue pencils for sketching before cleaning up in the mechanical pencil before the final ink.
