Wonder Con Approaches

Wonder Con 2011 is weeks away and the convention website just released the list for Artist's Alley. There are the usual suspects for a Bay Area con but that isn't such a bad thing with Art Adams and Travis Charest living in the Bay.

Adam Hughes will be stopping by (no doubt with his wife, fellow artist Allison Sohn). If you think Adam's work is just about the T&A, then you aren't paying attention. Sure, that is the main component but the man knows how to draw. If you can't afford his prices for a convention drawing (ranging from $200-$400, I think), he has affordable sketchbooks for sale. Not his actual sketchbook, mind you, but a printed collection of his drawings for the year, some sketches, most very polished con drawings. He puts these out every year, usually debuting a new one each July at the San Diego con. If you miss a year, he does have back issues but the prices go up, so it is wise grab the latest each year at the affordable price and not to be suckered into the outrageous eBay scalper prices. If you got the cash to pony up for an AH! sketch but don't want to fight the waiting list, Hughes will be back in the Bay in San Jose a couple months later for the BIG WOW! Con, which is a smaller-attended art-centric con run by Steve Morger.

The previously mentioned Travis Charest should be a Wonder Con as well. I say "should" because the man can sometimes be as rare as the Easter Bunny. Sometimes you can catch him at his table and some days he's not there at all. But if you can pin him down, he's a nice guy and an incredible talent. He hasn't been that prolific recently with only the occasional Marvel Comics cover but perhaps he'll have some copies of his SPACE GIRL book.

Much like Adam Hughes, I make sure I make my rounds to Art Adams' table to see if he has a new sketchbook for sale. Sometimes his are higher in price but you are getting more than your money's worth with his incredibly detailed pen work. Just some beautiful stuff. I wasn't always a fan of his earlier work but he has really upped his game in the last 10 years. I like it when artists do that when they keep getting better rather than hit that plateau.

Greg Horn will also be attending. I know some friends out there that don't always care for his work but I love it!! Just because one has Photoshop doesn't mean you can paint with it. But Horn can and few in the comic industry have taken it to the level he has.

On my "You Don't See Them Everyday" List for Artist's Alley is Bob Layton and Brian Stelfreeze. I always loved Layton's early Iron Man work and he's a great interview on the podcasts I've heard and I don't see Stelfreeze at the cons I go to too often so they are on my list.

I also see listed a table for "nipplesonthebatsuit.com".

I'll assume Joel Schumacher didn't get a table.
